How to Become an Umpire.

So, you're considering becoming a baseball umpire? Congratulations! You could be on your way to joining one of the most rewarding avocations anywhere. We are a close-knit fraternity of sorts. Umpiring is an avocation that will allow you to make life-long friends with a common interest and make some extra money along the way.

You're in luck.

You've found the largest, most organized, and most talented group of baseball umpires in Central Virginia. Our umpires have worked baseball games from Little League through NCAA Division 1 post season and everything in between. We work games primarily in the RVA and Tri-Cities area. No matter what level of baseball you’d like to work or where you live in the Central Virginia area, you have come to the right website to learn how to get started.

Who is ODUA?

Old Dominion Umpires Association is a non-profit umpiring organization whose sole responsibility is to find games for umpires to work. It's our job to provide umpires for scholastic baseball and local travel ball games in the RVA area. We have an Executive Board made up of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Commissioner/Treasurer, and four Members At Large, which guide our group. You can read the ODUA Constitution as well as the Policies and Procedures by clicking the links provided.

What Level of Games Can I Receive?

ODUA umpires work some weekend showcase ball, Middle School, High School, and Community College. Some of our members have also vaulted into, NCAA Division 3, and NCAA Division 1 assignments due to their successes in ODUA. Typically, new umpires can work middle school, travel and even into JV baseball. Though this is the typical progression, you will not be held back if you excel.  If you are transferring in from another group, you will be evaluated as quickly as possible and will receive games based on your ability.  Having a letter of transfer from your former group, stating what level of games you worked, is very helpful.

What Can I Expect?

You can expect to have fun and make friends!  You should also expect to attend most, if not all training opportunities your first year, and as many as possible after that.  Your success depends upon your ability and willingness to learn.   If you put forth the effort, you can expect to be successful and be well compensated for your efforts. We typically have training opportunities in the late summer, fall and winter as we prepare for the spring season. January begins our official "season". We have monthly association meetings gearing up for the spring season. All of our assignments are made via an online assigning portal and much of our communication is done through email.  Being diligent with email and keeping up with daily assignments and changes are critical to your success.
